Chapter 8

Another day without any food and almost no water had Dev dragging himself from his bed. He skipped the bathroom since he was too dehydrated to pee and went right to the kitchen. Dev didn’t care if his teeth needed to be brushed. He wasn’t trying to impress anyone now.

The main room was still cluttered with party remnants. Dev looked a second time when he saw Adrian’s couch resting in its usual place. He shook his head, as he hadn’t even noticed last night.

With the thought of last night, many emotions came careening into him again. He steadied himself against the wall as his legs started to give. It was only six more days then Zeus would help him. He didn’t even have to ask him. He could always return to his father’s estate as it was his now.

On the kitchen table sat a bouquet of flowers, a glass of water, and a smoothie. Adrian was sitting, but Dev could see his leg bouncing as he entered. Dev ignored the entire area and went to the cupboard to get a glass.

“Dev, I have water here for you. I can get you something else if you prefer.” Dev ignored Adrian, and filled his glass with water from the refrigerator door. He drained the glass only to fill it again. “I made you a fruit smoothie. I wasn’t sure what kind, so it’s strawberry and banana. That seems to be a popular flavor.” Dev slammed his empty glass onto the counter and turned to glare at Adrian, who held the wrapped flowers in his hands. “These are for you.”

His proffered gesture only made Dev angrier. He filled his glass again and made to leave Adrian in the kitchen. Adrian grabbed his hand as he passed. Dev looked at it as he spoke. “Did you hear nothing last night?”

“No, please, I need to talk to you.” Adrian was on his knees the flowers abandoned on the floor next to him. “I’m sorry. It’s been too much too soon. Please, don’t leave me.”

“I won’t leave until the mourning period is over. I will not promise you anything more than that.”

Dev wrenched his hand free and locked himself away in his borrowed room.

Dev was using all his energy to block Adrian from his heart. He didn’t want Adrian to feel him at all. Dev wanted Adrian to feel alone and hurt and angry. He was ashamed of his actions and wanting to hurt someone else. But he couldn’t let Adrian in again. Dev had started to let Adrian in before, and Adrian turned on him. Dev had been giving Adrian his heart piece by piece over the last week, and Adrian was keeping him at arm’s length. No more.

A pain in his chest alerted him to Adrian’s distress. It also told him Adrian was trying to connect with him. He couldn’t allow that again. Dev needed to meditate, to clear his mind. He went to his bag and grabbed the one constant he made sure to always have—Nag Champa incense.
